Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Your customers look to you to be the travel experts. We are here to be your travel insurance experts! If your customers aren’t sure they need travel insurance coverage, here are a few common questions and our responses.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It?

Yes! Travel insurance is so important for any trip, and can help protect travelers from out-of-pocket expenses and offer extra support when unexpected problems arise.

Here are the top reasons we think every traveler should purchase insurance.

Got a question about travel insurance? These FAQs may help you communicate with your customers as they plan their travels.

Do I need extra coverage? I already have credit card travel insurance.

Many credit cards offer travel insurance, but this coverage can have lower benefit limits and require special conditions to activate the coverage. Travel insurance from a specialized provider can provide plans that offer higher benefit levels, as well as increased support for travelers if unexpected surprises turn their trip upside down

Do I need extra coverage? I already have health insurance.

With many US health insurance plans, there can be limitations on what bills insurance companies will cover overseas. Often, domestic health insurance won’t pay for an evacuation back to the US – which can be expensive – and the impacted traveler may be stuck overseas until well enough to travel commercially.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance can provide coverage in case something goes wrong - helping manage financial risk and allowing travelers to confidently explore the world.

At Travelex, we aim to make the process of purchasing travel insurance simple:

  1. Get a quote online to find out the available protection plans and cost
  2. Once you’ve completed the process and purchased travel insurance, certain coverage will start next day, and others will vary
  3. If anything goes wrong on the trip, the traveler can contact our travel assistance provider’s 24/7 emergency assistance team for help. Need to make a claim? You can do so online here.

How much travel insurance do I need?

At Travelex we understand every trip is unique, which is why we offer a number of travel insurance plans. The plan that’s best for your customer depends on their travel style and trip details – such as the destination, trip length, and planned activities.

For example, our Advantage plan may meet the needs of more budget conscious travelers, while travelers looking for the most comprehensive coverage with higher benefit limits may prefer Ultimate.

When should I buy travel insurance?

It's a good idea to purchase a travel insurance plan right after making the first trip payment. The earlier it’s purchased, the sooner coverage starts to protect the trip.

Does your customer have a pre-existing medical condition? They may be eligible for coverage if purchasing our Ultimate plan within 21 days of their first trip payment and insuring their full trip cost. Other conditions apply, and more information is available in policy documents and on our website.

What does travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance can help cover unforeseen events for domestic or international trips. Our plans combine travel insurance coverage and travel assistance to protect travelers before and during the trip, until return home. Plans can cover events such as trip cancellation and interruption, travel delays, missed connections, lost or stolen luggage, emergency medical and dental expenses, and more.

What does travel insurance not cover?

Travel insurance won’t cover events that were foreseeable, and travelers will need to take steps to reduce risk on their journey. For example, policies will not cover claims arising as a result of intoxication or being under the influence of drugs (subject to state variations). It’s important to check the exclusions in the policy document before departing on the trip.

Does travel insurance cover terrorism?

Our trip cancellation benefit can provide coverage if there is a terrorist act in a city listed on the itinerary within 30 days of scheduled arrival. Please check the Policy document for definitions on what is classified as a “Terrorist Act”.

Will I receive documentation of my policy to carry with me?

Insured travelers will receive a Confirmation of Coverage and applicable plan documents via e-mail, including a link to view their Policy and a Description of Coverage. The Confirmation of Coverage will include information such as the confirmation number, policy effective date, benefit levels and important contact information. The Policy and Description of Coverage will provide the plan details including benefits, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

Travelers should carry these documents on their travels in case of an emergency. It’s also a good idea to print Travel Assistance contact information if traveling overseas.

Travelers can also keep their policy in their pocket with our Travel On app, which features tap-to-call 24/7 travel assistance, destination information, and real-time safety alerts.

What is Primary coverage?

Primary coverage refers to the order in which a travel insurance claim can be filed with your travel insurance provider. Primary plans pay out from the first dollar owed, allowing claims to be filed directly with the travel insurance provider, eliminating involvement of a traveler’s health insurance company. The benefit of having primary coverage is the speed of reimbursement. With Primary coverage, the insured traveler will typically receive reimbursement on eligible losses first before any other collectible policy.

The Travelex plans that include Primary Coverage are Ultimate, Advantage, Travel Med Go, and Flight Insure Plus.

Can I cancel my travel insurance policy?

If your customer is not completely satisfied within the 21-day (30 days in IN, NH, & UT) review period of purchasing a plan, and have not yet departed or filed a claim, Travelex will refund their plan cost.
